It’s not perfect, and nothing is, but it’s damn close.

The Nice Guys tells a story of a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate the apparent suicide of a fading porn star in 1970s Los Angeles.

I won a free ticket to this film when I attended the UK premiere and I couldn’t recommend it enough. If you liked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, this film is definitely something for you. It’s a buddy film at its best with characters that have been created in the utmost hilarity and absurdity, with a lot of the gags unexpected but fit well in the story universe. Though it may seem strange in the beginning, it’s there to create the universe for the film and the hilarity that ensues. The jokes included in the film are original and aren’t highly sexualised, on the most part, despite a backstory on the porn films of the 70s. This is all a thankful breath of fresh air.

Even though Russell Crowe plays the hardball and serious PI with the wealth of experience, Ryan Gosling is the one that steals the show. It was a genius casting choice as he’s able to show of both his physical and comedic prowess, showing his diversity as an actor.

It’s a movie within a movie but doesn’t get lost within itself, becoming very self aware at times of the world that it’s portraying. It’s a boat load of fun and shouldn’t exactly be taken seriously.

This is by far the best film I have seen all year. It’s not perfect, and nothing is, but it’s damn well close to it.

Film-O-Meter: 9/10.
